No accidents at Belarusian nuclear power plant ever so far, expert assures

MINSK, 2 May (BelTA) – No accidents have ever happened at the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Head of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) Olga Lugovskaya mentioned it on the air of the Belarusian TV channel STV, BelTA has learned.

When asked how people should treat leaks about accidents at the Belarusian nuclear power plant, Olga Lugovskaya said: “You have to get all the information from reliable sources.”

In her words, everything is strictly regulated at this facility. All the events that happen at the nuclear power plant are categorized. Requirements for reporting various events have been set, including reporting to the regulatory authority.

The official noted that the so-called International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) exists within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The scale ranks the degree of an accident. It has seven levels and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant catastrophe is categorized as a level 7 event.

“So far absolutely no accidents have happened at the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” Olga Lugovskaya stressed.
