Interactive 3D model of nuclear power plant on display in Minsk

An interactive 3D model of the AES-2006 design, which is used to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets was presented at the 5th international specialized expo and conference AtomExpo Belarus 2013 on 2 April. The model was presented by the Saint Petersburg-based R&D and design institute Atomenergoproject, BelTA has learned.

Atomenergoproject specialists said that visitors will be able to learn about priorities of the design. Those are the combination of safeguards, the reliability of design solutions and the adaptation to the Belarusian site. All of them will be demonstrated in parallel using the interactive system.

In line with the contract signed by the general contractor hired to build the power plant and Atomenergoproject, the Saint Petersburg company will provide design documents to build the nuclear island, the turbine island, and the physical protection of the power plant. In line with subcontracts Atomenergoproject will work out design documents and engineering documentation for cooling towers of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

AES-2006 is a generation three-plus design. It is being used to build the second Leningrad nuclear power plant and the Baltic nuclear power plant. Dubbed as MIR 1200, the design takes part in the tender to finish the construction of the Czech nuclear power plant Temelin. The design relies on four active safeguards that parallel each other. Those are the device to localize the liquid alloy, a system for passive heat dissipation from the reactor shell, a system for passive heat dissipation from the steam generator, a system to remove hydrogen, and a dual shell of the reactor building.

OAO Saint Petersburg Research and Design Institute Atomenergoproject (SPbAEP) is Russia’s only company that designs nuclear power plants with various types of reactors. The choice includes water-cooled power reactors, fast neutron reactors, high-power graphite-moderated nuclear power reactors RBMK, and thermal power engineering installations.
