Belarus NPP construction deadlines stay intact

The Belarusian nuclear power plant construction deadlines stay intact, Deputy Energy Minister of Belarus Mikhail Mikhadyuk told a press conference on the 5th international exhibition and conference AtomExpo Belarus 2013 on 2 April.

“Today we are talking about the development works which are going ahead of schedule. Faster progress was due to the preliminary work in the organization of the first construction period conducted by several profile institutes. The development works were completed earlier than planned also doe to teamwork and cooperation between our construction and assembling complex and the general constructor,” the Belarusian official said.

With this, all the development works are compliant with the quality standards. This fact was confirmed by Rosatom State Corporation and the IAEA mission that paid a visit to Belarus. The preliminary stage of the Belarusian NPP construction received high opinion from the presidents of the two countries not long ago, Mikhail Mikhadyuk stressed.

“Our major goal that is to build one of the world’s most modern nuclear power facilities fully meeting the safety standards and economic efficiency requirements stay unchanged,” the deputy minister said.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant will have two power-generating units with the total capacity of up to 2,400MW (1,200MW each). It will be built at the Ostrovets site in Grodno Oblast. The design AES-2006 that fully meets international norms and IAEA recommendations has been chosen to build Belarus’ first nuclear power plant. The first unit is scheduled to come on stream in November 2018, the second one in July 2020.
