Belarus, European Commission working on nuclear safety cooperation project

16.10.2013

The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry and the European Commission are busy working out a new technical cooperation project. The project will be able to help the Belarusian ministry in nuclear and radiation safety matters, representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department (Gosatomnadzor) told BelTA.

The technical cooperation project has been discussed between representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department and the European Commission.

The Belarusian and European experts talked for three days to discuss ways to improve the strategic planning practices of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry. The sides also discussed current and promising avenues of cooperation between the European Union and the Belarusian agency in charge of regulating nuclear and radiation safety matters.

As part of an existing international technical aid project European experts from Germany and France and representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry discussed in detail and renewed the Department’s strategy. The strategy covers various aspects, namely the management of human resources, surveillance and licensing in nuclear and radiation safety matters, approaches to building information and communication efforts, and quality management.

Speaking about results of the talks, representatives of the Belarusian agency stressed that cooperation between Belarusian and European experts in the area of nuclear safety is intensive, dynamic, and goal-driven.

BelTA has been told that in the modern world efforts to ensure nuclear and radiation safety ceased to be the concern of individual nations and even interstate associations a long time ago. Now it is an international task. The European Commission is a case in point as the Commission is supposed to assist with nuclear and radiation safety matters not only in the European Union but also in partnering states.
